CHAPTER SEVEN
JO STARED INTO the darkness, listening to rain that became heavier as the night wore on. Shards of confused dreams buzzed through her head—surely caused by Meru’s ominous message, but somehow dominated by Luc’s imposing presence. He’d just kissed her again.
No! She forced her wayward brain away from the memories. Worrying about Meru’s message would play infinitely less havoc with her emotions than reliving those fevered moments. Even dreams of Luc’s kisses had the power to set her pulse soaring.
Meru didn’t flap easily, so whatever she had to discuss was not going to be good news.
The night seemed to drag on for ever, but eventually she fell asleep and dreamed again, waking to a dull light glimmering through the curtains. Rain beat against the windows, driven by a gale off the sea. Hastily she leapt out, but of course it was too early—Meru would still be in bed.
Still, there was work she could be doing. She opened the link on the computer, biting her lip as she waited for it to come through.
Nothing happened.
Angrily she stabbed at the keys, until a peal of thunder made her close down the computer and hastily switch off the power, grimacing in resignation. This tropical depression probably reached all the way from New Zealand to Rotumea, so it was more than likely there’d be no power on the island. So the communications system would be down.
Sighing, she accepted she’d have to possess her soul in patience, as her aunt would have said. Shower first, she decided, and then try again to see if Meru could get through.
But she’d only got halfway across the room when a noise erupted into the drumming of the rain—a violent crack that made Jo jump, and then a loud sighing crash.
‘What—?’ she gasped, swivelling towards the window.
She’d just pushed back the curtains when a knock on the door reminded her she was still in her nightgown, an elderly shift that finished at mid-thigh and was too transparent to be decent.
‘Wait—I won’t be a moment,’ she called, and grabbed her dressing gown, also of faded cotton, though marginally less see-through than her gown.
She opened the door a fraction, her heart flipping when she saw Luc. ‘What is it?’ she asked.
Another bolt of lightning lit up Luc’s unshaven face, followed by thunder rolling across the heavens.
‘What happened?’ she demanded.
‘It sounds as though a tree’s come down,’ Luc said grimly, and strode into the room as the lights snapped off.
Together they peered out into the grey murk.
‘Over there.’ He pointed. ‘On the beach front.’
Jo craned her head. Yesterday a large conifer had blocked the view of the outer harbour, but now she saw tossing, roiling waves as they pounded onto the shore.
‘The Norfolk Island pine,’ Luc said curtly. ‘I’ll collect Sanders and we’ll make sure no one was walking past when it got struck.’
‘I’ll come with you.’ She turned away, but Luc caught her arm.
As though on cue, lightning flashed again, and thunder rumbled like a distant cannon. Jo froze and
